AMF News

I did a poor job of keeping you updated during my hiatus…sorry about that! I used the hiatus to start graduate school over the summer but still made time for a few event sessions. I had the pleasure of photographing a Huntington High School and Douglass High School reunion in July, a concert by Dan Godlin at the Joan C. Edwards stadium during MU’s Week of Welcome, and a wedding in Barboursville on August 31st.

I realized that I would not be able to continue to take on new clients while I am in graduate school and teaching part-time and working full-time…so I decided that my last session for A Modern Focus would be the wedding on August 31st. Since then, I have been tying up loose ends for the business. I opened A Modern Focus in July of 2007 and it has been a great run! I’ve met and worked with a lot of great people and want to thank them for giving me the opportunity to create images and designs for them.

I’m thinking about doing a retrospective of some of my favorite images from over the years, but we’ll see how my free time shapes up. I have this domain for another year and a half, so I figured I should use it for a long as I can.

AMF Hiatus

I’m finally getting a bit of time to breathe after the rush of the last few months, and need to mention a bit of news. I am about to embark on a couple of new projects that require more focus and attention, so I decided to take a hiatus from A Modern Focus. I’m going to start taking graduate classes this summer, as well as, working on a grant proposal for the local community and technical college. During the last few months, I quickly realized that by adding two new projects to my roster of responsibilities I would increase my chances of failing miserably at all of them! So, I’m putting down the camera for a bit. How long? I’m not completely sure just yet. I know the rest of May is spoken for and probably so is June. Honestly, I’ll have to see how things progress and will keep you posted. Until then…

AJ, Evan + Family

Photographing high school seniors is always fun, but sometimes I get the added bonus of meeting and photographing their families during a session. This opportunity presented itself a couple weekends ago when I photographed AJ and Evan. It worked out that the rest of their family were available that afternoon so we planned a mini family session the same day! I had a great time that afternoon photographing AJ, Evan and their family. Check out a few images from their family session.

And, yes, I tried the cupcakes….DELICIOUS! I’ll definitely have to stop by her shop next time I’m in the area to try some of the other flavors…my favorite from today was the Orange Dreamsicle.

Happy 100th Birthday, Mrs. Johnson!

April has been a pretty busy month for me, so I’m just getting to blog about some of the sessions and events I had the opportunity to photograph. The 100th Birthday Celebration for Beatrice Johnson of Huntington was held on April 20th at Pullman Plaza Hotel, and I had the opportunity to attend and photograph the very special event.

There were 15 generations present at the party, with the oldest grandchild at age 65 and the youngest at age 3. Family and friends from all over came to celebrate with Mrs. Johnson…also known as Ms. Bea by family and friends. One relative traveled in from Afghanistan, and others traveled from Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, California, Georgia, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan and of course, West Virginia to spend the afternoon celebrating. Believe it or not, Ms. Bea was not the only centenarian in attendance…Ms. Geneva Horton, a long time family friend, celebrated her 100th birthday in March! Huntington’s Mayor, Steve Williams, attended the event to give his birthday wishes as well as a Proclamation honoring Ms. Bea.

This event not only served as a birthday celebration for Ms. Bea, but also a chance for family members to reunite and see each other after many years. I had a great time meeting Ms. Bea and her family before the event happened and it was an honor to be there to see so many people come together to celebrate a wonderful woman. Here are a few images from the day.

Loy: HHS Class of 2013

It seems like mother nature has finally decided to bring spring-like weather to us, and I am SO happy!  I was starting to worry a bit about the trees and flowers blooming for the last batch of 2013 senior portraits before graduation arrives. Speaking of graduating seniors…I had the pleasure of photographing Loy, a HHS senior last week in Huntington. He opted for a more urban/city feel, which worked out great since like I mentioned, foliage is kind of lacking in most spots! To see more from his senior session, head over to AMF Seniors!

New Pricing and Policies

It’s been at least 3 years since I took a look at my pricing, so I have been going over the numbers and updating a few things. I plan to update to the new pricing and policies on April 15, 2013. For current clients and clients that have already booked a session for later this month, the current pricing and policies will apply through ordering from your session. For anyone that schedules and books (pays for) a session by April 15th, the current pricing will also apply. After April 15th, all new sessions and products will have the new pricing and policies. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Nancy Webb – Local Volunteer

Toward the end of last year, I received an assignment to photograph a local volunteer from Lavalette, WV. At first I wasn’t sure what to think because the call came from out of the blue and from California! However, after talking with the art director and learning more about the volunteer I was all in, especially because it involved reading.

Nancy Webb volunteers as the librarian at Lavalette Elementary. I had the pleasure of going out to meet and photograph Nancy at the library last year for a profile on her service. Even though Nancy mentioned she was not as comfortable in front of the camera as behind (a fellow photographer!) she quickly warmed up to all the clicking of my shutter and gave me several great head shots to deliver.

Being in the library and talking about books with Nancy made me remember the days when I use to read ALL the time. There were times I would finish one book and have the next one ready to start right beside me… those were the days. My mom is an avid reader and I’m sure that’s what got me started at such a young age. It makes me sad to think I don’t make the time to read for fun anymore.

Anyhoo, enough about me… I’d love for you to read more about Nancy and the great things she is doing for her community: Superstar Volunteer: Nancy Webb
